Marathon Training Group 2019

The Marathon Training Group Starts again on Sunday 30th of December.

We welcome newcomers to our Marathon Training Group as well as those that have joined us in previous years. If you are interested, read on for more information and just turn up at Exeter Harriers’ Pavilion, Exeter Arena just before 9am (unless otherwise stated on the run diary). Sessions are open to members & non-members of the club.  There is a fee of £2 per run for non-members as a contribution towards costs (members are already paying through their club subscriptions).


In one form or another, the Marathon Training Group has been running for many years within South West Road Runners.

Who is it for?

The group is open to all runners aged 17+ who are interested in some longer endurance training.  You should be capable of surviving 13 miles (at any pace) at the start of the programme.

Set up for those training for a Spring Marathon, it may also be of interest to runners training for the Grizzly, or anyone who fancies a bit of distance and some company on their long runs.
We do not all run together, but we do run in pairs or groups for safety and to try to avoid getting lost (previously this has worked fine for everyone apart from the quickest runners, one or two of whom seem to lose their eyesight and/or common sense when running!)
We typically have runners ranging from those aiming to finish in under 3 hours, to 1st-timers who just wanted to get round – so everyone is welcome.  You can’t be too slow, or too quick…

What is provided?

Each Sunday, from January through to April, there will be a long run starting from Exeter Arena, except that on some weekends we will encourage you to take part in named races rather than a training run.  We will be meeting in Exeter Harriers’ Pavilion at 9am for a briefing on the route and to pair/group up into similar paced runners.  The routes will be subtly marked and will have a water station at around half way.  Many weeks there will be a slightly shorter option available.

Please note- All routes are subject to change due to weather conditions, flooding, roadworks, etc.
