Update on the 2020 Marathon Training Group
SWRR has organised a Marathon Training Group (MTG) for the last few years. Or more accurately, a small number of dedicated members have helped to put the programme together, organise each long run, provide information and briefing, set out signage and drinks stations, and clear up afterwards. This is a not insignificant task, taking up at least half a day nearly every Saturday or Sunday between January and early April.
Both members and non-members of SWRR have attended these group runs over the years, and have expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the group organisers, which has in turn been greatly appreciated.
In more recent years, there has been a growth in on-line bespoke training plans for prospective marathon runners, and advice & tips are more readily available. While our long runs reflect some kind of programme in which distance is built up over time, they can’t fit in with everyone’s plan, even when short cuts/elongations are feasible. We have noticed that small groups of people following similar plans to each other have clubbed together and organised their own version of the programme, sometimes using adaptations of our planned runs, sometimes on different days of the week. This is to be applauded and encouraged.
In light of the above, and that those who have been responsible for organisation of MTG in recent years are no longer available to do it for various reasons, SWRR will not be running a formal MTG this year. We will offer every encouragement to small groups doing their own thing by offering a forum on this page to help with organising runs and exchanging useful information. We will also make available the details of routes used in previous years (last year’s programme appears below). Please look out for further details.
We wish all would-be marathoners successful training and a good result, wherever you may be running.
